Frank Johnstone Jervey, (1893-1983) graduated from Clemson College in 1914 and entered military service in 1917. His combat record earned him the Distinguished Service Cross and Italian Marito de Guerro for heroism. In 1922, Jervey was employed as an ordinance engineer by the Ordnance Corps of the Department of the Army. Jervey became known as an authority on small arms and incendiary ammunition. Joseph L. Arbena was born in 1939, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph and Sophia Arbena. He received a bachelor of arts (A.B.) from George Washington University (1961), and a doctorate (PhD) from the University of Virginia (1970). He was a Professor of History at Clemson University between the years 1965-2006. While there, his scholarship focused on Latin America as well as the history of sport.
